Paying regular additional payments on your principal can yield singificant savings. Borrowers pay extra in a few different ways. For many people,Perhaps the simplest way to keep track is by making 1 extra mortgage payment per year. Of course, some people can't swing such a large additional expense, so dividing one extra payment into 12 extra monthly payments is a great option too. Another very popular option is to pay a half payment every other week. The result is you make one extra monthly payment every year. Each of these options yields different results, but each will significantly reduce the length of your mortgage and lower your total interest paid.

Additional One-time payment

Some borrowers can't manage any extra payments. But you should remember that most mortgages will allow you to make additional payments at any time. You can take advantage of this rule to pay down your mortgage principal any time you come into extra money. If, for example, you receive a surprise windfall five years into your mortgage, you could pay a portion of this windfall toward your loan principal, resulting in enormous savings and a shorter payback period. For most loans, even this small amount, paid early in the loan period, could offer big savings in interest and in the length of the loan.
